Never should have told the Vermont State Trooper to fuck off. That was a mistake, too bad I realized this after being handcuffed, arrested and stuffed into the patrol car. “So your from Canada” he says. “When I was last in Montreal the cops up there beat the shit out of me and my friends.” Not good I thought, as I went through a mental checklist as to what I was about to go through. “Yeah maybe I should teach you some old fashioned American respect” he continued. “Uhh.. well the thing is Constable” I stammered. “We are not Constables down here its Trooper to you son” he corrected. “Uhh yeah, well the thing is Trooper I was a little frustrated back there and well I guess I got a little to animated and well ……I suppose I was outta line… sorry ?” “You can save your sorries, it’s Friday night I’m gonna search you, and you better not be holding anything or your life is about to get a lot worse” I immediately was very thankfull I had left the chunk of fudge I smuggled into this puritan place back at the hotel. Hopefully there was no random paraphanalia in my pockets. “After I search you” he continued “your going to the holding cell for the week-end no judge will be up this late Friday for you to post bail. Hope that fuck you was worth it”

Well it turns out, it was. I was able to post bail and two weeks later the court clerk threw out my swearing at an officer charge. Evidently it’s not illegal in Vermont, just not a very smart thing to do. I suffered some embarrassment for the whole debacle because at the time I was coach of a Ski team and although to the skiers the whole thing brought me a sort of mythical rebel status, to their parents who paid the bills it may have made me seem a bit to sketchy to send their little Nancy Greens off around the world with an authority hating madman.

Pfft fuck it , the jarhead had it coming, Trooper whatever your name was thanks for the story, you sure made me squirm a few times at border crossings in Vermont when they ran my passport and asked if I had ever been arrested. I always say no and I have cleared enough times to believe that the whole incident never made it into the database.

I boned out to Oahu soon after cause you know what? Skiing is for chumps!

PS I never paid the fine either
