 I was in a good degree free from useless, personal prejudices, and hatreds against malicious evil people, which so widely prevailed among men of warped understandings and uncharitable hearts. No, the superstitions concerning evil had not yet launched their bittersweet arrows into my heart.
In my Philosophy, I perceived how evil was but good disguised, and a sinner but a saint in his own way. How that on other planets, perhaps, what I deem wrong, may there be deemed right. Just like some materials, without undergoing any changes in themselves utterly change their colour, according to the light thrown upon them.
Ahh….but all this was before my heart was ripped from my chest and crammed down my throat.
A studied observation of my nemesis convinced me that he was a neat and gentlemanly villain, and drove his vehicles with a dainty hand. There was a fine polish about his whole person, and a pliant, insinuating style in his conversation, that was, socially, to many, quite irresistible. Hidden below however was a psychopath and an irreclaimable scoundrel, who did wicked deeds as the birds sing in the morning, because wicked deeds seemed the legitimate structure of his whole mental framework. Simply, he was without a soul.
Now I stand before you, a bitter, broken hateful man, afraid to venture into the real world. One who exists as a broken shell, empty of any philosophy on life.
For after all, philosophy the sound foundation of happiness, is in my mind but a muddy field or a melted sheet of ice, with a few tufts of good footing here and there.
