 Readers: though an inlander, A Lakeman is wild-ocean born, and wild-ocean nurtured; as much of an audacious mariner as any. And for Megastir, though in his infancy he may have laid down on a lone Cape Hatteras beach, to nurse at his maternal sea; He is still worthy of the self awarded title "King of the Lakemen".
Those grand fresh-water seas that he often speaks of: Erie, and Ontario, and Huron, and Superior, and Michigan, --possess an ocean-like expansiveness, with many of the ocean's noblest traits; with many of its rimmed varieties of races and of climes. They contain round archipelagoes of romantic isles, even as the Polynesian waters do; in large part, are shored by two great contrasting nations, for miles and miles they are flanked by ancient and unentered forests, where the white pines stand like serried lines of kings in Gothic genealogies. They float a like the full-rigged merchant ship, the armed cruiser of the State, the steamer, and the beech canoe; they are swept by gales and dismasting blasts as direful as any that lash the salted wave; they know what shipwrecks are, for out of sight of land, however inland, they have drowned full many a midnight ship with all its shrieking crew.
A Lakeman is often as adept with an axe as he is with sail. He knows ice and snow. He can skate, often engaging in a peculiar and violent game on open ice with sticks and pucks of galvanized rubber. And though it is easy to mock an inlander for his lubberliness, these Lakemen defy such characterization and are often as salt as any raised in the lap of the great oceans of the world.
As Megastir packs off in his 4wd piled high with weapons of wave destruction to the wilds of wind swept Georgian Bay. Know this dear reader, that a lakeman he is, and proud of it.
