"I hope we don't chunk out."

That was what we found ourselves saying to each other as we scrambled out of the northern Ontario wilderness in a Diesel VW Rabbit whose frame had been broken on the brutal washboard logging roads. There were no brakes either and the rig could only be slowed using the e-brake and by gearing down. We were in terror because every time we hit a bump the fender came down on the tyre cutting big chunks of rubber off and sending them flying behind us as we sputtered down from Timmins in a black cloud of poison diesel exhaust.

"if we chunk out we're fucked"

I turned up the music to try and forget the danger.
