....We gave three heavy-hearted cheers, and blindly plunged like fate into the lone Atlantic.....

waking up at the shady acres in Goose Rocks Beach Maine you'll hear the surf booming if a late fall swell is pounding the New England coast. Fall colours grace the tree's and the lobstermen are praying their traps are not destroyed by the high seas.

.... He was a native of Cape Cod; and hence, according to local usage, was called a Cape-Cod-man. A happy-go-lucky; neither craven nor valiant; taking perils as they came with an indifferent air; and while engaged in the most imminent crisis of the chase......

The characteristics of the waterman cool in the face of what for the landsmen would be grave danger. The thing of it is, that this calm is born from experience. Starting from small dangers overcome. Building to the point where even the great frigid swells of the North Atlantic whose icey sprays blast from the crests and freeze on board in great slabs of hanging ice, are calmly accepted as the norm.

.....When close to the whale, in the very death-lock of the fight, he handled his unpitying lance coolly and off-handedly....

I once saw a modern day waterman playfully challenging the Pacific's great combers. This man, who lost his rig in the 20 ft surf surfaced from his fall and facing a breaking swell on a shallow reef simply rose up with the mountainous swell and moments before the break, gave three quick hard strokes towards land, then bodysurfing plunged ahead of the wall of water towards the relative safety inside the reef. In that fraction of a second that this man passed me, as I witnessed this from the safety of the channel he not only seemed at home in the jaws of the mighty swell but he looked at me and smiled as if to say "isn't this a lovely way to pass the day". I my self was at the limits of my ability that day but this man was simply toying with Neptune.

...... Long usage had, converted the jaws of death into an easy Chair......
