Manley Stink was the sort of kid who got teased. One time they even threw his runners over the telephone line that crossed his street, they hung there for years as a constent reminder.
He used to make up imaginary friends. Friends that would not tease him but have his back when the taunting began. Friends that had cool names like John Savage and Mike Ravine.
Manley Stink spent most of his time wondering what it would be like to be someone else. Maybe a bush pilot flying in north Saskatchewan. Perhaps a professional hockey player for the Los Angelas Kings. Sadly he knew his fate was to end up plugging ethernet cards into the backs of beige boxes.
It's a cruel world. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything. Attitude is everything. The thoughts inside his head were a jumble of half finished slogans and snippets of purloined dialogue. Sometimes he would weave these bits and pieces into little phrases, shaping them and moulding them. Then admiring and reading till occasionally a smile might cross his lips. His school binders were full of these paragraph's plus small drawings and sketches. It was the only thing they couldn't take away. Well they could, but usually they never bothered.
"I hate this!" he often thought. but then just like his writing he would think about the situation, shape it, change it, view it from a different perspective and usually he would come to terms, even like it.
"See you in Hell Manley Stink!" the kids cried out from the school bus as it roared away in a foul cloud of exhaust.
"Not if I see you first first" he thought as a wry smile lit up his face, "not if I see you first...." he chuckled.
