The three girls were from the windward side. They took a liking to me although I don't know why. They said they wanted to skip school and take me to the North shore. Mokuleia was their favorite beach. We all met up and leaning against Michelle's VW rabbit they showed me a bag of mushrooms they brought along. "They grow in cow shit" Aka proudly said with a dazzling smile. "we picked them this morning". "Go ahead eat some you they will make you feel wond -er-full". As she said "wond-er-full" she twirled around with her pretty face to the sky all tanned, blonde hair radiating outward, her sundress spun up exposing for the briefest of moments her bikini bottoms, pink polka dots.

I stared at the three beautiful creatures smiling back at me then reached into that wet plastic baggy for a handful of those purple soggy mushrooms and started swallowing. "you need to eat a lot to get the full effect". Mica smiled as she said this. I looked at her quizzically. I tried to decide for the briefest of moments if it was safe to eat this strange drug. However all I could see was this girls beautiful blue eyes offset by a smiling freckled face framed with brown hair streaked blonde by a lifetime spent in the sun.

I was powerless in a way that only a young man in the throes of three beautiful girls could understand. We piled into the VW and we were off.

"My mom sent me to Hawaii to get away from the bad crowd I was hanging with in California" Michelle volunteered as we sped past the translucent blue of Kaneohe bay, I nodded clutching my plastic bag of soggy purple mushrooms and staring at her perfect lips glossed with a pink sheen of aloe based sunscreen.

All three girls wore tiny bikini tops and sarongs covering their perfect bottoms as this was the style of the islands in those days. I could not believe my good fortune sitting in the back of this vehicle with these sparkling creatures. We soon came upon the last stoplight on the windward coast. The valley of the Temples was framed by a giant waterfall cascading down 5000 feet of lush green mountain side I stared out the window at the rainbow that was forming from the mist and the drugs began to take hold.

The girls said that Mokuleia beach had the perfect sand. They were looking forward to lying out in the thick sand and feeling the warmth of the sun. "Its a perfect beach Michelle" Aka said flashing her blue eyes and sparkling teeth. "Oh my god I can't wait" said Michelle. As she spoke I watched as she kind of bit her lower lip in a way that showed she was thinking of more than just the perfect sand.

Soon were were in Haleiwa, the heart of the north shore. The girls kept up the chatter about this and that and as we slowed for the traffic circle that acts as the gateway to Kaena point and Mokuleia we passed a blond surfer pedalling a beach cruiser. He spotted all the girls in the VW. I turned to look out the back window as we passed him. He saw me and flashed me the Hang loose hand signal letting me know that he was impressed at the bevy of beauty he saw surrounding me. It seemed to all happen in slow motion and before I could process it all my mind focused in on the girls chatter. "Mica this is the place yeah?" Using the strange island habit of raising her voice on that last word to indicate it was a question. "oh my god, park here and we have to go over that fence and run for the beach". "My brother said he got chased by the farmer here one time for trespassing." We gathered up the towels snorkels and other beach items and in a blazing dash of nubile young flesh the girls were on it. We made it to the beach and in one smooth motion that left me awestruck they had whipped off their bikini tops and blasted into the surf giggling and frolicking as only young girls can. I spread out the towels and tried to keep cool when they plopped themselves topless at my side. "oh my god Mega you have got to love this beach its perfect".

Perfect it was. Sometimes I really can't believe the stuff that happens to me. When times are difficult as they sometimes are. All I need to do is remember that at any moment something could happen that will be spectacular and define what it is to feel alive. The beauty of a waterfall, the complex mix of sparkling innocence and radiating sexuality of my three beach companions that day is more than just a fuzzy flashback. It stands out. I never saw the girls after that day. We drove back to Kailua after snorkeling and frolicking together on that spectacular beach. When asked by my Waikiki pals what I had got up to that day I just didn't have the heart to tell them nor did I think they would believe the truth of that day but for what its worth there it is.

Hawaii really is a paradise.
