So the reason mechanical breakdowns are to be feared up here is that it can cost you your life. A few years back I was up at the Lake new years eve and at minus 29 the coldest evening of the year. So I check in with a guy who lives near by and he tells me of stuffing his car in the ditch the night before while driving drunk. Then walking a mile to the closest chalet, where the owner refused to let him. I suppose he thought it dangerous and then he called the cops. Well pretty soon the cops show up and accost my drunken pal. In way they are his savior because he would have froze to death. The cops however question him about what he's doing drunk out there in the middle of the night. He's got a history of DUI so he does not tell them about the car and they do not spot it deep in the ditch. He gets a ride home and tells me this story. We go pull out his rig from the ditch and later I am driving over the mountains chuckling about the whole episode when what happens? My truck breaks down......fuck! So I hop out and run up to the nearest house pound on the door and the granny refuses to answer. "Please call Ryan's garage tell them I stuck on Highway 105" I say as the chill quickly starts me panicking. Luckily when I run back to the rig I manage to get it running and make it safely home. But I could easily see how you could lose your life when the weather is as ferocious as it is in these parts.
